Demand for Kratom Leaves for developed countries has increased

Kratom or Mitragyna Speciosa native plants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea. Kratom leaves contain compounds that can change minds and affect the same brain receptors as morphine. This is what makes kratom a popular herbal remedy. Now the leaves of this tropical tree are increasingly used throughout the world as a painkiller and as a substitute for opioids.

This plant is a big highlight in the West, but in Tuana Tuha, a rural village in East Kalimantan in Indonesia, this plant is considered a gift and a livelihood. Kratom leaves can be used to reduce pain such as diarrhea and can provide energy for the body that feels tired.

Although it has bad side effects for the body, the price of Kratom leaves is very promising for farmers in Kalimantan. In Indonesia, kratom is easily sold. Many parties who sell it through the internet and wrapped as tea powder. Sales are also very high and of course, this makes the farmers get a high income as well. Kratom for sale of kratom leaves around 200 kg could get about Rp 400 thousand per day. This leaf’s fertile period is between January and May. As many as 300 farmers can get 50 tons of kratom leaves per month, generating an income of one billion rupiahs ($ 70,600).

The profit from the sale of kratom leaves can reach one trillion rupiahs. This opportunity is widely used by residents of the location by cultivating kratom trees because, in addition to high selling prices, the production cycle is also fairly fast.

Initially, local residents only used the tree bark to brew and drink by the mother after giving birth so that the healing process was faster. But after getting information about kratom leaf requests from abroad, finally, the local population became kratom leaf farmers.

This kratom leaf information can be used as a medicine, but if taken in large doses, it can be dangerous because it contains alkaloids, mitragynine, and other ingredients that can provide a sedative effect that causes addiction. Big media such as the New York Times reported Kratom as drug abuse. The mechanism of action is still debated, but it is suggested that Kratom contains active biochemical compounds that activate opioid receptors at sufficient dosage levels, which implies that Kratom can be used in the management of pain and mood disorders. Other effects kratom can give effect convulsions, kidney failure, and others. The use of kratom leaves is currently under investigation in the United States, where more than 130 people die every day due to an opioid overdose.

The US Food and Drug Administration has warned about the consumption of these drugs. In Indonesia, the state narcotics agency recommends the health ministry classify kratom as first-class psychotropics, in addition to heroin and cocaine. Drug offenses in this category are subject to a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The American Kratom Association estimates that there have been 15.6 million kratom users in the United States in recent months. The United States Narcotics Control Agency oversees the use of kratom and several cities in America and Europe have also legalized kratom leaves.
